Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches

The Madagascar hissing cockroach has a thick, hard, and waxy exoskeleton that serves as body armor. This species will hiss loudly when threatened. This characteristic sound is made by forcing air out through breathing tubes called spiracles on the sides of the abdomen. The noise is so loud it can be heard 12 feet away!
The Madagascar hissing cockroach, also known as the hissing cockroach or simply hisser, is one of the largest species of cockroach, reaching 5 to 7.5 centimetres at maturity. They are native to the island of Madagascar, which is off the African mainland, where they are commonly found in rotting logs.
Hissing cockroaches are also used in research and kept as pets due to their interesting appearance and behavior. Unlike pest species, hissing cockroaches are poorly adapted to man-made environments and cannot infest homes in temperate regions of the world.
