Cherokee Flats is a Proud CoCoRaHS Weather Observation Station!

At Cherokee Flats, our commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community involvement extends beyond our animals and farming practices. We are proud to participate in CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network), a nationwide, volunteer-based weather observation network.

CoCoRaHS brings together volunteers across the country to collect and report precipitation measurements, helping meteorologists, researchers, farmers, emergency management agencies, and local communities better understand weather patterns and precipitation trends.

At Cherokee Flats, sustainability isn't just something we talk about. It's a commitment we strive to uphold through our daily practices, responsible animal husbandry, conservation efforts, and the choices we make as a small farm.

We also believe in transparency, so we want to address our use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

You may notice that some of the graphics and promotional images we share on our social media pages are created or enhanced using AI technology. We recognize that AI has an environmental footprint, including the energy and water resources required to operate the technology.

Does this mean we're abandoning our commitment to sustainability? Absolutely not!

We understand that sustainability is not about achieving perfection. It's about making thoughtful, informed decisions, acknowledging our environmental impact, and continuously looking for ways to improve.

At Cherokee Flats, we believe:

We also want to emphasize that our use of AI-generated imagery does not change our commitment to providing accurate information about our animals, our breeding programs, or our farm. When sharing photographs of our actual animals, we believe in representing them honestly.

Cherokee Flats employs a range of practices to minimize our footprint and maximize our positive impact. We proudly partner with the World Bird Sanctuary and the Illinois Raptor Center to provide natural food sources for non-releasable birds of prey and birds in recovery by donating rabbits, rats, and mice. This closed-loop approach ensures valuable resources are utilized. Furthermore, we strictly 'breed for need,' preventing overpopulation and promoting ethical breeding standards. Our commitment extends to comprehensive husbandry and educational outreach.
